How To Move A Hot Tub?

With our chilly Alberta winters, it is no surprise that people become attached to their hot tubs. That is why when it is time to move, many people decide moving a hot tub is definitely worth it. Due to their size, hot tubs are dangerous to move. It is a process that can turn bad quickly if you don’t have the right tools or equipment. Regardless of your moving expertise, it is should be handled carefully and with a lot of help.

Step 1 – Unplug and Drain the Hot Tub

First, unplug the spa completely from electrical currents, gas lines, and all other connections and hookups. Wrap all of the cords up into the wooden enclosure so that there are no dangling cords that can get in the way. Make sure that the motor is properly secured in its place. Also, make sure that the hot tub is completely drained and dry, and that the drain cap is securely tightened in its place.

Step 2 – Remove Hot Tub Cover and Cover Lift

Remove the cover and cover lift you might have secured to your tub. It is much easier, not to mention safer, to remove this now and reattach it later than to have it moving during transportation. Take a screwdriver and unscrew the pieces attaching the lift to the tub and set it off to the side to move separately. Gather these screws and find a safe place to put them until it comes time for you to reattach the cover later.

Step 3 – Lift the Hot Tub on its Side and Place Dolly

Now, turn your tub on its side and make sure that you have given yourself enough room to place people on each side. A furniture dolly should be used to move the hot tub when traveling along flat surfaces. For upstairs and downstairs moving, you are going to want to use an appliance dolly with tow straps attached. With the hot tub on its side, lift one end and center the dolly under the hot tub. Depending on the size of the hot tub, you can use two dollies if you like, placed one under each end.

Step 4 – Move Hot Tub to New Location

Carefully wheel your tub to its new place. If you need to load it on to a truck, it is ideal you have a truck with a power tail gate. If not, make sure you have a long walkboard to the push up into the truck is not too steep. If you need to push the hot tub over the grass on the dolly, put down plywood or your wheels will get stuck. Once the hot tub is at its final destination, lift one end and remove the dolly. Carefully lower the hot tub so it is sitting on its feet in its final resting place. Finally, reattach the cover that you removed earlier.
