How to Find a Pediatrician?

Finding the right pediatrician for your child can be a time consuming process, especially after a move.  It is important to do your research online.  Once you have a clear understanding of what providers are covered with your insurance, you want to begin your search online.  Ask your colleagues and friends with children if they have any suggestions or recommendations.  After you have narrowed down your search, it is time to meet the doctors.  Even though it may be tempting to just go yourself to meet the doctor without interruption, take your children with you.  It is important to see how they interact with the doctor and if they have a comfort level with him or her.  This is very important.  At the end of the day, your child has to feel comfortable with their doctor in order to express themselves and communicate effectively.  When you meet the doctors, let them know that you are meeting with several of them before making a decision.  Most doctors will support this.

After meeting with the doctors, sit down and have a chat with your children.  Ask them for their thoughts and listen to what they say.  Granted, ultimately it will be your decision but it is important to get their perspective because they will have to communicate with the doctor.  If your child is too young, just assess their comfort level at the appointment.  Another thing to consider when deciding on the right pediatrician for your kids, is to get to know their staff and facilities.  Some pediatricians will offer a sick and well room in the waiting room for patients.   This is a fantastic option when available. Having a list of questions with you when you meet the doctors is helpful.  It will help ensure that most of your questions will be answered and that you ask the same questions to each doctor so that you can compare responses easily.
