How to Make the Most of Your Relocation Benefits

March 5th, 2012 4:57 pm by

If you are on a corporate relocation, making the most of your relocation benefits is the best way to ensure that you have optimized all that is available.  Once you have been offered the assignment, the first thing you want to do is educate yourself on the companies policies, procedures and benefits offered.  This will enable you to get a clear understanding of what is your responsibility and what the company will cover.  It will help you make your arrangements and plan accordingly.  It will also help prepare you for any implications on your budget.  If you have any questions, ask to get clarification.  You do not want any surprises, once you have accepted the assignment.  Most companies that offer corporate relocations either have a contract company handle their relocation services and/or have a human resource representative handle it or coordinate with this third party contractor.  Either way, you should review everything and make a list of questions.  This way you can call and get the answers you need to make an educated decision.

If your company is new to relocations, you may have to do more leg work and educate yourself on the fly.  If this is the case, make sure you understand your perimeters.  This way you are not left in an awkward position.  In any event, you should evaluate all of what is being offered and how it will have an impact on you financially.  If you own your home, find out if your benefits include help with the sale of you residence.  If not, find out if it is possible to rent out your home and if your employer benefits help with this as well.  Even though you may not be in a position to make a choice to go, meaning your job is now elsewhere and you must move to keep it, make sure you understand what is available to you and assess its implications on you and your family.  Take advantage of what is being offered.  Educating yourself and evaluating your options will help you make the right decision for you and your family.  Remember, your professionals here at Highland will do their best to help you through the process.
