Moving Tips: Don’t Forget the Memberships

Before you move, it is very important to review the contracts on the memberships of athletic, tennis or golf clubs you may have. Take the time to understand what your commitments are and what you will have to do to either terminate your contract or put it on hold or transfer it. Before you call or stop in to the establishment, read your agreement. Evaluate your options and then contact them. This way you will be better prepared to have a conversation on your options. When you do contact them, see if they are willing to work with you. Know that some institutions are more willing to work with you than others. Ask them if you are a responsible for a termination fee. This is critical because it will help you evaluate the cost difference between the two.
Ideally, you should discuss the possibility of being able to terminate your contract without a penalty because of a move, before you ever do move. This is something you can keep in mind for any new memberships you consider after you move. In the meantime, if you have not agreed to any previous terms regarding a move discuss your options and mitigate. Learn from your experience and use it to help you negotiate in your new community.
