Tools Required for a DIY Move

February 10th, 2016 6:48 pm by

At Highland Moving & Storage, you can always count on our Professional Movers to provide standard moving equipment on your move. This includes 2 wheel hand trucks for boxes, 4 wheel floor dollies for boxes and furniture and other items such as a ladder and tool box.

However, when you are performing a DIY move, you may not have these tools available to you. Below is a list of tools we recommend you have on hand during your DIY move to make the moving process as easy, efficient and as successful as possible.

Packing

Moving Boxes & Packing Materials: Every move requires boxes and packing materials to effectively pack up and transport small items. The more small items you pack up, the faster your move will be because everything will be boxed up which is more efficient than carrying armfuls of items at a time. It will also ensure that items are less likely to be damaged. Whether you provide your own materials or have us provide them for you, it is important to know what types of boxes to purchase for certain items. You can visit either of our locations to view the various types of packing materials we offer.

Loading

Floor Protection: Even though you are moving out of the loading location, you should still make the effort to protect the floors. This is especially true if loading is taking place in poor weather conditions like snow or rain. At Highland our Professional Movers use rubber floor runners that are placed throughout the entire house. Always remember to be careful when placing floor runners on stairs. We recommend taping them down using standard packing tape. When you are done loading, shake off the floor runners so that when you roll them out in the new home, you are not tracking in more dirt.

Furniture Pads: When our Professional Movers load up a home, they use moving blankets or “pads” on every single piece of furniture. We also use them to wrap the banisters on all staircases to prevent damage to them.

Plastic Bags/Shrink Wrap: Our Professional Movers use large plastic bags to wrap cloth furniture that can get dirty such as upholstery and large cushions. You can purchase these large plastic bags from our online packing supplies store. We have them for both sofas and chairs. Shrink wrap is a good substitute for wrapping upholstery.

Mattress Bags: Our Professional Movers use large plastic bags to wrap mattresses and box springs so they do not get dirty. You can purchase these mattress bags from either of our locations.

2 Wheel Hand Truck: Great for moving several boxes at a time as well as large pieces of furniture, especially up or down stairs.

4 Wheel Floor Dolly: Great for moving several boxes at a time as well as large pieces of furniture, especially on a long walk from the door to the truck.

Tools: Our movers come equipped with all of the standard tools for furniture disassembly. Typically you will only need screw drivers, Allen keys, pliers and a ratchet set. Before your move, think about what needs to be taken apart and make sure you have the proper tools on hand on loading day.

Tie Downs & Straps: Both of these are necessary for securing your load. Different types of trucks and containers have different types of tie downs and straps. It is a good idea to find out what you need ahead of time.

Unloading

Floor Protection: When unloading your belongings in to your new home, damage prevention should be your top priority. Roll out your clean floor runners and pad your new banisters.
